Why Your Promo Code Isn’t Working (and 9 Fixes)

The nine most common reasons a promo code fails at checkout, and what to do about each one.

You found a code, pasted it at checkout and got “This code is not valid.” It happens to everyone, and in most cases the reason is simple. Below are the nine most common causes, in the order we would check them, and what to do about each one.

1. The code has expired

Most promo codes have an end date, and many seasonal codes only last a weekend. Old codes keep circulating on forums and social media long after the store has switched them off.

Fix: look for the expiry date next to the code before you copy it. On PercentPocket every offer shows its end date, and expired codes move to a separate “Recently expired” list so you don’t waste time on them.

2. Your cart doesn’t meet the minimum spend

“$20 off orders over $100” means the code will be rejected at $99.99. Some stores calculate the minimum before tax and shipping, others after other discounts have been applied.

Fix: read the terms line under the offer, then check your subtotal. If you are just under the threshold, a small add-on item can cost less than the discount you unlock.

3. The items in your cart are excluded

Sale items, gift cards, new releases and certain brands are often excluded from codes. A code can be valid but simply not apply to anything in your cart.

Fix: remove items one at a time to see which one is blocking the code, or look for a “sitewide” code instead of a category code.

4. It’s for new customers only

Welcome codes usually check your email address, your account and sometimes your shipping address. If you have ordered before, the code will fail even though it is still active.

Fix: look for codes that are not limited to first orders, or check whether the store has a separate loyalty or referral offer for returning customers.

5. A typo or an extra space

Copying a code can pick up a space at the start or end, and some codes are case-sensitive. Letters like O and 0, or I and l, are easy to mix up when typing.

Fix: use the Copy button rather than retyping, and delete any spaces before you click Apply.

6. Another discount is already in your cart

Most stores accept only one promo code per order. If a sale price, a bundle offer or an automatic discount is already applied, the store may refuse a second code or keep whichever is larger.

Fix: remove the first discount and compare the totals. Sometimes the automatic sale is the better deal.

7. The code is for a different country or currency

Many stores run separate sites for the US, UK, EU and Canada. A code issued for one store often won’t work on another, even if the products are identical.

Fix: make sure you are on the right regional site, and check the terms for words like “US only”.

8. It’s a private or one-time code

Codes sent to one customer, codes for students or staff, and influencer codes with usage caps can all be switched off once they have been used too often or shared publicly. Stores may also cancel orders that use codes they never made public.

Fix: stick to codes stores share through their official affiliate programs, which is the only kind we list.

9. The store’s checkout is having problems

Occasionally the code is fine and the checkout isn’t. Ad blockers, old browser data and switching between the app and the website can all stop a discount from applying.

Fix: refresh the page, try a private browsing window, or complete the order on the device where you built the cart.

Quick checklist before you give up

  • Is the code still within its dates?
  • Does your subtotal meet the minimum spend?
  • Are any items excluded, especially sale items?
  • Is it a new-customer or one-time code?
  • Did you copy it exactly, without spaces?
  • Are you on the right country site?
